Five Advanced Team members of the Grandfathers For Golf youth program based in the Hemet/San Jacinto area were awarded college scholarships recently; four from the Southern California Golf Association (SCGA) Youth on Course program, and one from Golden Era Productions, which owns the Golden Era Golf Course, home base for the Grandfathers program.

The four SCGA scholarship winners are Nicholas Medeiros, West Valley High School; Caitlin Milton and Garrett Moyer, Hemet High School; and Kailee Ward, San Jacinto High School.

The Golden Era Productions scholarship recipient is Alex Campos, who is a student at Mount San Jacinto Community College.

As far as the SCGA scholarships go, Grandfathers submitted five outstanding Advanced Team members who are graduating seniors for scholarship consideration. Four of the five were asked to take part in a first phase scholarship interview process at the SCGA office in Studio City.

Prior to their scheduled interviews, Grandfathers hosted a Congratulations Dinner for the applicants and their families. Following dinner a five-person panel of Grandfathers volunteers conducted mock interviews. The panel prepared questions regarding current events, research topics, degree choice and choice of university. It didn’t take long for the students to settle in to the process and answer the questions calmly, responsively, and non-defensively.

On April 4, the four SCGA applicants went through the official interview process. Following the interview, Frank McCollum, head of the Advanced team, met with all 10 of the panelists. Frank reported that “to a person they all wanted to express their genuine appreciation to Grandfathers for submitting four exceptional scholarship applicants.”

On April 28, the four applicants received an e-mail from the SCGA letting them know they have been awarded an SCGA Youth on Course scholarship for the 2014-2015 school year. A formal letter with specific award amounts and scholarship policies will be mailed to them soon. Their scholarship is renewable for up to four years for scholars who remain in good academic standing and meet the annual requirements and program expectations.

Alex was notified of his $1,000 scholarship from Golden Era Productions on May 1, 2014.
